Heartache as a spiritual opening


Both falling in love and losing love take us to the deepest parts of our life’s long journey. Our hearts are touched as we open ourselves to the depths of pain and joy, as well as raw and deep feelings and truths that may have never been experienced before.
Although we are probably all destined to have our hearts broken at some stage, what is less often understood is that this ‘break’ allows us to ‘open’ our hearts more and that this opening is to Divine, infinite love.
Among the Sufis, there is a saying that asks God to break the heart: “Break my heart so that a new room is made for boundless love.” Paradoxically, after experiencing the loss of love, we return to love, to inner marriage, and to the wisdom of the sacred heart.
With great vulnerability comes a deeper intelligence…
Heartache in this sense is a sacred initiation. The journey to healing from heartbreak is well imprinted in the great myths and stories handed down to us as part of our archetypal heritage. The journey always involves trials and death (ego) and rebirth – new life. Part of this journey includes being willing to suffer and be in exile for a while.
Symbolically, we are in exile either way, because we are divided after heartbreak, and our quest to return home to ourselves represents our journey of healing. To be in exile means to be separated from others, divided within and forced to seek…
